Course Overview

This Access to Higher Education – Nursing and Midwifery Diploma is made to provide a short but flexible entry point to higher education in nursing/midwifery and other related careers – to help you become prepared for employment or further education within the nursing and midwifery sector. This course provides opportunities for learners to develop a breadth of knowledge and understand of subject matter related to education and training topics and issues with a focus on development of underpinning skills, personal qualities and behaviours/attitudes essential for successful performance in study and working life. This strong base will support continued learning and development as an individual, allowing for further improvements in knowledge, understanding and skills.

When and Where:

This course has intakes available in January, March, June and September

Classes are taught through hybrid learning, with in-office classes as well as via Zoom for a duration of 9 months

Course Content:

The main aim of this course is to prepare students for study at university. Students will receive subject specific study skills preparation, as well as tuition in subjects that are relevant to their chosen degree course.

You will study modules covering:

  • Care of Mother and Baby in the Post Natal Period

  • The Role of the Modern Nurse and Midwife
  • The Role of the Paramedic as an Individual and Within the Team
  • Academic Research Skills
  • Academic Writing Skills
  • Improving your Own Learning
  • ICT – Skills and Uses for Higher Education
  • Introduction to the Use of the Internet

This course is designed for anyone wanting to progress into a career in the NHS or other health related organisations. You can progress on to higher education to study for some of the various roles that come under the banner of nursing and midwifery professions, including; adult nurse, children’s nurse, therapist, learning disability nurse, research midwife, midwife and maternity nurse, midwifery practitioner, neonatal nurse and maternity support worker.

How is the course assessed?

There are a variety of different assessment methods used within this course, including written examinations, reports, portfolios, essays, presentations and more. These are decided by Courage Consultants UK Limited and are reviewed annually. These may change from time-to-time, in order to maintain compliance with the Ascentis assessment standards

Entry requirements

All applicants are required to be assessed by the admissions team, involving:

  • an interview – to assess listening and speaking skills
  • initial assessments – to assess mathematical and English abilities

All applicants are required to be able to demonstrate they have an appropriate standard of English and Mathematics to enable them to access relevant resources and complete the unit assignments, this can be:

  • GCSE C/4 or above
  • IELTS 5.5 or above (with no score dropping below 5.0)
  • WAEC C6 or above
  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2 or above
  • Or equivalent qualifications

Certification:

On completion of the course learners will gain a recognised Access to Higher Education – Nursing and Midwifery Diploma, awarded by Ascentis
On completion of this course individuals can progress onto further courses related to their career aims and interests.
